The 2005 Mazda RX-8 is a unique and innovative sports car that stands out for its high-revving rotary engine, balanced chassis, and surprisingly practical design. As the spiritual successor to the RX-7, the RX-8 carried forward Mazda’s rotary legacy with a modern twist.

At its heart is the 1.3-liter RENESIS rotary engine, producing 197 horsepower with the 4-speed automatic or 238 horsepower with the 6-speed manual transmission. The engine revs up to 9,000 RPM, delivering a smooth, linear powerband and an exhilarating soundtrack. While torque was modest, the lightweight body and near-perfect 50:50 weight distribution made it exceptionally agile and responsive.

One of the RX-8’s standout features was its freestyle rear-hinged rear doors, offering easier access to the rear seats—something rare in a sports coupe. It also included a driver-focused cockpit, precise steering, and sport-tuned suspension.

Though known for higher maintenance due to the rotary engine, the 2005 RX-8 remains a favorite among enthusiasts for its originality, sharp handling, and the unmatched feel of a rotary-powered sports car. It’s a bold, high-revving machine with true driving soul.
