The 1993 Toyota MR2 is a standout from the second generation of Toyota’s mid-engine sports car, known for its exotic styling, sharp handling, and affordable performance. By 1993, the MR2 (chassis code SW20) had been refined with suspension updates and styling tweaks to improve drivability and reduce its tendency for snap oversteer.

It came in two main trims:

  • Naturally aspirated model: Powered by a 2.2-liter inline-four (5S-FE) producing 130 horsepower

  • Turbo model: Featuring a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four (3S-GTE) with 200 horsepower and significantly quicker acceleration

Both versions featured a mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout, delivering excellent balance and a connected, sports-car feel. A 5-speed manual was standard, with a 4-speed automatic available.

The 1993 model stood out for its Ferrari-like styling, pop-up headlights, and optional T-top roof. It offered supercar looks and dynamics at a fraction of the price, making it a hit with driving enthusiasts.

Today, the 1993 MR2 is considered a Japanese classic—valued for its unique layout, tunability, and engaging driving experience.
