The 1991 Volkswagen Jetta represents the final years of the second-generation (Mk2) Jetta, a compact sedan known for its solid German engineering, sharp handling, and practical design. Built on the same platform as the Golf, the Mk2 Jetta offered more trunk space and a more refined sedan style while maintaining the fun-to-drive character VW was known for.

In 1991, the Jetta came with a variety of engine options, including:

  • A 1.8-liter 8-valve inline-four (85–100 hp depending on trim)

  • A more powerful 16-valve 1.8L in the GLI version, producing up to 134 horsepower

  • A fuel-efficient 1.6-liter diesel in some models

The Jetta GLI was the enthusiast’s choice, featuring sport-tuned suspension, four-wheel disc brakes, alloy wheels, and often Recaro seats, making it one of the sportiest compact sedans of its era.

With its boxy styling, durable interior, and strong reliability, the 1991 Jetta became a favorite among students, commuters, and tuners. Today, it’s remembered as a true driver’s compact with European character and surprising capability in a practical package.
